we were just pretending

"I guess I like that idea that you could pretend yourself into new feelings and new relationships. Obviously I'm a big pretender. but the kind of leap where it's almost like some kind of science fiction thing happens. Like we were just pretending, and then what's this? We actually have new powers now, and we see each other differently, and in fact all of life has suddenly tilted. I'm going for that everyday, personally."

February House cast album comes out on October 16. Pre-order here and download a track immediately.

Kristen Sieh as Carson McCullers, singing about the Coney Island freak show. So glad they did a recording of this show, and this song in particular.

“I’ll always love big musicals. Shows like Hairspray and Anything Goes just want to make me happy, and if they don’t change my life, then so what? There are worse things than smiling for two hours while 35 hotties nail a synchronized tap number on the prow of a boat.

But sometimes, I love a musical that makes me come to it. Instead of singing in my face, a show like that whispers in my ear, giving me a private message to consider on the way home.”

I just saw February House at the Public Theater and now I’m kind of obsessed with this story. A crumbling Victorian in Brooklyn Heights in 1940 that was co-inhabited by George Davis, Carson McCullers, W.H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, Gypsy Rose Lee, and like 30 other awesome art/lit types.

“LA” - Gabriel Kahane

“She drives cause there’s a lot of road
Motion makes her calmer than to take it slow”

Saw him earlier this week in the Lower East Side. He’s great. This song is for totes about Joan Didion’s Play It As It Lays—which I had to stop reading cause it was making me too depressed—but I’m definitely gonna give it another shot.
