The Student Loan Mafia Is Coming for Your Mom →
See, thanks to some nifty lobbying, you can’t discharge your student loan debt through bankruptcy, even though that more or less ruins the entire point of bankruptcy for the younger generation of Americans.
In unsurprising news, we’re all still totally fucked.

A Complete Guide to 'Hipster Racism' →
“People in positions of power simply cannotmake jokes at the expense of the powerless. That’s why, at a company party, you never have a roast where the CEO is roasting the janitor (“Isn’t it funny how Steve can barely feed his family? This guy knows what I’m talking about!” [points to other janitor]). Because that would be GROSS, and both janitors would have...

Morning on Mars
6 Martian sunrises, as seen by the HiRISE orbiter. Once again, not artist’s renditions.
Morning on another world.
Absolutely wonderful.
Whoa. These made me tear up.

“Rochelle Peachey, the founder of the dating site I Love Your Accent, is sitting alone in a restaurant, gabbing away on her cellphone, when a few minutes into the conversation, the phone she’s talking into starts to ring. Busted!
Such is the length Peachey once went to in order to battle the embarrassment and awkwardness she — and so many female business travelers like her...

10 things you need not worry about →
Look, 53 percent of the world claims they’re “happy.” Which seems utterly impossible, given how they can’t all have unlimited access to iPads and iPhones and free porn and bacon-flavored vodka and Leonard Cohen records and Burning Man and Ducati motorcycles and sweaty yoga and artisan whisky and leather, like you do. What is wrong with them? Might they be onto something?...

Earth's shadow - Wikipedia →
The Earth’s shadow or Earth shadow (also sometimes known as the dark segment) are names for the shadow that the Earth itself casts on its atmosphere. This shadow is often visible from the surface of the Earth, as a dark band in the sky near the horizon. This atmospheric phenomenon can sometimes be seen twice a day, around the times of sunset and sunrise.
Neat!

"I Died For Beauty," Emily Dickinson
I died for beauty, but was scarce Adjusted in the tomb, When one who died for truth was lain In an adjoining room. He questioned softly why I failed? “For beauty,” I replied. “And I for truth - the two are one; We brethren are,” he said. And so, as kinsmen met a-night, We talked between the rooms, Until the moss had reached our lips, And covered up our names.

McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: Back From Yet... →
Several faculty members maintain that Dr. Jones informed them on multiple occasions of having discovered the Ark of the Covenant, magic diamond rocks, and the Holy Grail! When asked to provide evidence for such claims, he purportedly replied that he was “kind of immortal” and/or muttered derogatory statements about the “bureaucratic fools” running the U.S. government. Given his history with the...

"Dunes" - A.R. Ammons
Taking root in windy sand is not an easy way to go about finding a place to stay. A ditchbank or wood’s-edge has firmer ground. In a loose world though something can be started— a root touch water, a tip break sand— Mounds from that can rise on held mounds, a gesture of building, keeping, a trapping into shape. Firm ground is not available ground.

Katniss Everdeen, a New Type of Woman Warrior -... →
“But Katniss doesn’t shift between masculinity and femininity; she inhabits both, which may mean that neither really fits.”
I definitely don’t agree with everything in this article, but the discussion is pretty interesting. I’m surprised they don’t bring up Buffy—she seems like a more obvious archetype for Katniss than Ripley or Sarah Connor in a lot of ways.
